Safari Overview

A relaxed, in-depth journey across Rwanda’s wildlife parks, volcanoes, lake country and ancient tropical forest. This is a private safari proposal, with your accommodation choices and activity arrangements agreed before booking. Travel times are indicative and depend on roads, weather, park arrangements and border formalities where applicable.

Suggested route: Kigali – Akagera – Volcanoes – Lake Kivu – Nyungwe – Kigali.

Detailed Day-by-Day Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Kigali

Meet your driver-guide at Kigali International Airport and transfer to your hotel. If your schedule allows, visit a cultural centre or take a short orientation around the city. Enjoy an easy first evening and review the itinerary, accommodation choices and permit arrangements before setting off into the countryside.

Overnight: A suitable lodge or hotel in the overnight destination, chosen after your preferred comfort level and availability are confirmed.

Day 2: Kigali to Akagera National Park

Travel east toward Akagera National Park and begin a wildlife drive after entering the park. Look for zebras, giraffes, antelope and waterbirds in the savannah and lake habitats. Check into your accommodation and enjoy a relaxed evening. The day's programme can be adjusted around arrival time and lodge location.

Overnight: A suitable lodge or hotel in the overnight destination, chosen after your preferred comfort level and availability are confirmed.

Day 3: Akagera game drives and lake country

Spend the day exploring Akagera with your private guide, choosing tracks according to recent sightings and conditions. Search for elephants, buffaloes, giraffes and birdlife, noting that lions and other predators can be elusive. A Lake Ihema boat trip can be included when reserved and operating. Return to the lodge after a varied day.

Overnight: A suitable lodge or hotel in the overnight destination, chosen after your preferred comfort level and availability are confirmed.

Day 4: Final Akagera viewing and Kigali stop

Take an early game drive or enjoy a leisurely breakfast before leaving the park. Travel back toward Kigali for lunch and an overnight stay. This deliberate pause reduces the pressure of transferring straight from the eastern lowlands to the northern highlands and offers flexibility for a short city activity.

Overnight: A suitable lodge or hotel in the overnight destination, chosen after your preferred comfort level and availability are confirmed.

Day 5: Travel north to Volcanoes

Depart Kigali for the terraced hills of northern Rwanda and continue to Musanze. Stop for refreshments and views of the Virunga peaks when the weather is clear. Check into your chosen lodge near Volcanoes National Park. The afternoon is free for rest and preparing for the gorilla trek.

Overnight: A suitable lodge or hotel in the overnight destination, chosen after your preferred comfort level and availability are confirmed.

Day 6: Mountain gorilla trekking experience

Report to the Kinigi park headquarters for the mandatory briefing, then join your assigned ranger group. Walk into the volcanic forest to locate a habituated mountain gorilla family; the walking route and duration vary. Observe the family during the regulated visit, following conservation rules. Return to your lodge for a peaceful evening.

Overnight: A suitable lodge or hotel in the overnight destination, chosen after your preferred comfort level and availability are confirmed.

Day 7: Golden monkey tracking and local scenery

Enjoy a morning golden monkey tracking experience with park rangers, walking through bamboo vegetation and forest clearings. After lunch, choose a gentle guided community activity or relax and take in the volcano scenery. This day is kept flexible to avoid overloading the programme after two mornings in the forest.

Overnight: A suitable lodge or hotel in the overnight destination, chosen after your preferred comfort level and availability are confirmed.

Day 8: Volcanoes to Lake Kivu

Leave the Virunga foothills behind for the western lake region. Drive to a lakeside hotel, stopping at viewpoints and local towns as the route allows. Spend the afternoon relaxing by the water. Optional short boat excursions can be arranged with properly licensed local operators, subject to weather conditions.

Overnight: A suitable lodge or hotel in the overnight destination, chosen after your preferred comfort level and availability are confirmed.

Day 9: Lake Kivu leisure and exploration

Take a full day to enjoy Rwanda's western lakeshore at your own pace. Options include a guided shoreline walk, boat outing or coffee-related experience where available. Enjoy some free time between activities. The slower pace provides a refreshing balance between national park visits and longer road journeys.

Overnight: A suitable lodge or hotel in the overnight destination, chosen after your preferred comfort level and availability are confirmed.

Day 10: Lakeside drive to Nyungwe Forest

Travel south through scenic highlands toward Nyungwe National Park, passing tea-growing landscapes and beautiful hill views. Stop for a picnic or lunch in a suitable town along the route. Check in near the rainforest and receive a briefing about the early morning chimpanzee tracking departure.

Overnight: A suitable lodge or hotel in the overnight destination, chosen after your preferred comfort level and availability are confirmed.

Day 11: Chimpanzees and Nyungwe forest experiences

Join a ranger-led chimpanzee trek after an early park briefing. Search for the habituated group through forested terrain, where both hiking time and sightings vary. If the trekking schedule permits, take an optional canopy walkway in the afternoon. Return to the lodge to relax after the full rainforest day.

Overnight: A suitable lodge or hotel in the overnight destination, chosen after your preferred comfort level and availability are confirmed.

Day 12: Return to Kigali and depart

Leave Nyungwe after breakfast and journey back toward Kigali through the southern hills. Stop for lunch and scenic breaks, arriving according to road conditions. Your guide will finish the safari at Kigali International Airport or another agreed address. Consider a final Kigali night if your departure time is early.

Overnight: Safari ends after the agreed drop-off; additional accommodation can be arranged if required.
