In the Virunga mountains, ranger-led tracking takes visitors through the forest to search for habituated mountain gorillas. An official permit is required and the minimum age for gorilla trekking is generally 15. Golden monkey tracking offers a separate primate experience with its own rules and permits. We recommend staying near the Musanze area to allow an organised early briefing.
Akagera protects lakes, woodland and savannah habitats. Guided game drives can reveal grazing wildlife, birds and larger mammals, depending on the season and conditions. You can combine Akagera with a volcano-focused trip or choose a shorter safari starting and ending in Kigali.
Nyungwe is known for montane rainforest, chimpanzee tracking, other primates and forest walking opportunities. Lake Kivu offers a slower change of pace, with scenic shores and suitable lakeside activities. Transfer times and park schedules are important when combining these places.
Three or four days can suit a focused gorilla journey, while a week or more offers time for wildlife, forests and Lake Kivu.
