WILDLIFE OF UGANDA & RWANDA

Meet the wildlife behind the journey.

Discover some of the remarkable species that live in these two countries and learn where to look for them during a private safari. Sightings are never guaranteed.

Rainforest primate

Mountain gorillas

Mountain gorillas live in close family groups in high-altitude forest. A ranger-led trek may lead to a supervised encounter with a habituated group, where visitors follow strict health and distancing rules.

RwandaVolcanoes National Park.
Forest primate

Chimpanzees

Fast-moving chimpanzees forage and call through dense forest. Trekking with trained guides is often energetic, and visits are shaped by where a habituated community happens to travel that day.

UgandaKibale National Park; Budongo Forest area in Murchison Falls Conservation Area.
RwandaNyungwe National Park, including its Cyamudongo forest area.
Savannah giant

African elephants

Elephants travel in social family groups and use grassland, woodland and water sources. Look for feeding activity from designated game tracks and avoid approaching or blocking the animals.

RwandaAkagera National Park.
Large predator

Lions

Lions are powerful social cats that may rest in shade during the day and become more active around cooler hours. Finding them requires patience; the famous tree-climbing behaviour is an occasional highlight in Uganda.

RwandaAkagera National Park.
Savannah browser

Giraffes

Giraffes browse the tops of acacia and other trees, often moving quietly across open savannah. Their height makes them memorable subjects during guided game drives, especially in the early and late daylight.

RwandaAkagera National Park.
Grassland grazer

Plains zebras

Plains zebras form herds and graze on short savannah grasses. They are a frequent target for family-friendly game drives and a good opportunity to notice the different markings of individuals.

RwandaAkagera National Park.
Big Five grazer

African buffaloes

African buffaloes may appear alone or in large herds near open grasslands and water. They can be unpredictable, so viewing should always be from appropriate distances with an experienced guide.

RwandaAkagera National Park.
River and lake mammal

Hippopotamuses

Hippos spend much of the day cooling in lakes and rivers, emerging to graze at night. Boat trips offer opportunities to observe them at a safe distance, along with waterbirds and crocodiles.

UgandaKazinga Channel, Murchison Falls Nile reaches and Lake Mburo.
RwandaAkagera National Park lakes, including Lake Ihema.
Bamboo-forest primate

Golden monkeys

These energetic monkeys move through bamboo and montane vegetation in the Virunga landscape. Guided tracking focuses on their fast, playful movements and conservation of their specialised habitat.

RwandaVolcanoes National Park.

A note about wildlife: Habitats, seasons and animal movements shape each experience. Gorilla, chimpanzee and golden monkey tracking requires the applicable permits and park guidance.
