Planning a private safari in East Africa
A rewarding safari begins before you arrive. The right destinations, travel season, permits and route can make the difference between a relaxed holiday and a rushed schedule. Use this guide to understand the main planning decisions for Uganda, Rwanda and selected Burundi journeys.
Choosing your destination
Uganda is excellent for combining gorilla trekking with chimpanzee tracking, traditional wildlife game drives and lakeside scenery. Rwanda offers gorillas in Volcanoes National Park, primate and canopy experiences in Nyungwe, wildlife in Akagera and relaxation by Lake Kivu. Burundi has memorable cultural heritage and Lake Tanganyika landscapes, although travel access and security conditions require particular attention.
When to visit
Uganda and Rwanda are visited throughout the year, with conditions varying between forests, highlands and savannah. Generally, less rainy periods make hiking and game drives easier, while wet seasons may bring green landscapes and quieter parks. Gorilla trails can be damp in any month. In Burundi, seasonal road conditions and current local advice are especially important when choosing an itinerary.
Gorilla, chimpanzee and golden monkey permits
Mountain gorilla trekking requires a permit in Uganda or Rwanda, and the minimum age is generally 15. Other primate activities have separate rules and capacities. Permits are limited and often tied to a particular date or park area. Never assume space is available until the relevant authority or operator confirms it.
Travel documents and entry rules
Check the passport validity requirements and entry arrangements for each country based on your nationality. Visa and immigration policies can change, including rules for combined itineraries. Burundi has additional entry and travel registration requirements; verify them through official immigration advice before departure. Always check whether a planned land crossing is currently open.
Health and travel insurance
Discuss travel vaccinations, malaria prevention and other medical precautions with a qualified travel-health professional well before departure. Carry appropriate insurance for the countries and activities on your itinerary, including medical evacuation where suitable. Certain gorilla trekking health restrictions protect vulnerable wildlife, so postpone a trek if you are unwell.
Flights, transfers and driving times
Most Uganda journeys begin at Entebbe International Airport, while Rwanda tours commonly start at Kigali International Airport. Some trips can include domestic flights to reduce road travel. Burundi itineraries are generally planned around arrival in Bujumbura. Mountain roads and park transfers take time, so avoid planning long drives immediately before critical permits or late international departures.
Accommodation and meals
Choose accommodation according to both comfort and location. A lodge close to your trekking briefing point can be more practical than a distant property with additional amenities. Tell us about dietary restrictions, accessibility needs and room preferences at the enquiry stage. All hotel and meal arrangements should be clearly listed in the final proposal.
What to pack
- Light layers for warm days and cool highland mornings.
- Comfortable closed walking shoes; hiking boots for rainforest treks.
- A rain jacket, sun protection and refillable water bottle.
- Binoculars, camera batteries and secure storage for travel documents.
- Prescription medication and personal essentials in your hand luggage.
Respecting wildlife and communities
Follow ranger instructions, keep the required distance from animals and never feed wildlife. Flash photography is restricted around gorillas. Ask permission before photographing people or visiting cultural sites. An excellent safari should benefit both visitors and host communities without disrupting wildlife.
Important Burundi travel note
Current safety advice highlights risks in parts of Burundi, including some areas near the DRC border, and the Rwanda–Burundi land border has been reported closed. Do not assume travel between Rwanda and Burundi is possible overland. We only propose routes after checking current official guidance, entry rules and local arrangements. Review UK foreign travel advice for Burundi before planning.
