Detailed Day-by-Day Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive in Kigali
Arrive at Kigali International Airport and meet your driver-guide for a hotel transfer. Take time to rest or arrange a short orientation drive depending on arrival time. The trip is designed around a mixture of active forest mornings and gentler scenic days, giving you time to enjoy Rwanda beyond the main parks.
Overnight: A suitable lodge or hotel in the overnight destination, chosen after your preferred comfort level and availability are confirmed.
Day 2: Kigali to Nyungwe highlands
Travel south through rolling hills and tea-growing landscapes toward Nyungwe National Park. Make planned breaks for lunch and photographs along the way. Check into your accommodation within reach of the park's trekking departure point and review the early morning schedule for chimpanzee tracking.
Overnight: A suitable lodge or hotel in the overnight destination, chosen after your preferred comfort level and availability are confirmed.
Day 3: Chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe
Rise before dawn for your transfer to the park briefing, where specialist rangers explain the activity. Enter the forest to search for habituated chimpanzees; the hike may be steep and slippery, and the group may move quickly. Return to the lodge to rest after the activity, with the afternoon kept flexible.
Overnight: A suitable lodge or hotel in the overnight destination, chosen after your preferred comfort level and availability are confirmed.
Day 4: Canopy walkway and nature trails
Enjoy a scheduled canopy walkway and a suitable guided nature trail if both are open and included in your confirmed arrangements. The canopy route offers a different perspective on Nyungwe's forest structure and birdlife. Spend the rest of the day enjoying the cool rainforest setting or visiting a nearby viewpoint with your guide.
Overnight: A suitable lodge or hotel in the overnight destination, chosen after your preferred comfort level and availability are confirmed.
Day 5: Transfer to Lake Kivu
Leave Nyungwe for Rwanda's western lake region, driving through tea estates and hills. Arrive at a Lake Kivu hotel and settle in for a relaxed evening beside the water. A gentle walk or lakeside dinner can be enjoyed if weather permits. No strenuous activity is scheduled after the transfer.
Overnight: A suitable lodge or hotel in the overnight destination, chosen after your preferred comfort level and availability are confirmed.
Day 6: Lake Kivu discovery day
Spend an unhurried day exploring the lakeshore with a local guide. Options include a boat outing, community-led excursion or visits to nearby coffee-growing areas, chosen to suit your interests and the lodge location. Enjoy time at the hotel between activities and watch the light change over the water.
Overnight: A suitable lodge or hotel in the overnight destination, chosen after your preferred comfort level and availability are confirmed.
Day 7: North to Volcanoes National Park
Travel north through the scenic western highlands to Musanze, gateway to Volcanoes National Park. Stop along the route to take in the views, then settle into your lodge near the Virunga foothills. Check trekking equipment and prepare for the early registration and briefing at Kinigi.
Overnight: A suitable lodge or hotel in the overnight destination, chosen after your preferred comfort level and availability are confirmed.
Day 8: Gorilla trekking in the Virungas
Meet park guides at Kinigi and join your allocated ranger-led trek into Volcanoes National Park. Mountain gorillas may be located after a short walk or a longer hike depending on conditions. Observe the family respectfully from the permitted distance, then return to the lodge to recover and enjoy your last mountain evening.
Overnight: A suitable lodge or hotel in the overnight destination, chosen after your preferred comfort level and availability are confirmed.
Day 9: Return to Kigali and depart
Have a relaxed breakfast before driving south to Kigali. Depending on travel time, visit a cultural centre or stop for lunch en route. Finish at Kigali International Airport or a prearranged hotel. An optional golden monkey trek can replace a free morning earlier in the journey, subject to permit availability.
Overnight: Safari ends after the agreed drop-off; additional accommodation can be arranged if required.
