Suggested route: Kigali – Akagera – Volcanoes – Lake Kivu – Nyungwe – Kigali.

Detailed Day-by-Day Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Rwanda

Arrive at Kigali International Airport, where your private guide meets you for the hotel transfer. Rest after your flight and enjoy a light city orientation if time allows. Discuss your preferred pace, the upcoming long drives and any special requests for meals or activities before the safari begins.

Overnight: A suitable lodge or hotel in the overnight destination, chosen after your preferred comfort level and availability are confirmed.

Day 2: Kigali to Akagera National Park

Drive east to Akagera, entering the park for an introductory game drive. Explore open grassland, lake-edge habitats and woodland tracks, with possible sightings of zebra, antelope, giraffe and elephants. Arrive at your accommodation in time to relax. Your guide will choose the game route according to current conditions.

Overnight: A suitable lodge or hotel in the overnight destination, chosen after your preferred comfort level and availability are confirmed.

Day 3: Full Akagera wildlife day

Start early to enjoy cooler hours in the park. Search for large mammals, predators and birdlife as you move between Akagera's varied habitats. Break for lunch, then continue wildlife viewing or join a reserved Lake Ihema boat safari where available. Overnight inside or near the park after a rewarding day outdoors.

Overnight: A suitable lodge or hotel in the overnight destination, chosen after your preferred comfort level and availability are confirmed.

Day 4: Cross to the Volcanoes region

After breakfast leave Akagera and travel west via Kigali toward Musanze. This is a scenic but substantial road transfer between Rwanda's lowlands and mountain highlands. Stop for lunch and a few viewpoints along the way. Check in at a lodge near Volcanoes National Park and rest for tomorrow's trekking activity.

Overnight: A suitable lodge or hotel in the overnight destination, chosen after your preferred comfort level and availability are confirmed.

Day 5: Mountain gorilla trekking

Attend the official Kinigi briefing and hike with park rangers toward your allocated gorilla family. The terrain may be muddy and steep, so pace yourself and take a porter if helpful. Spend the regulated viewing period observing the animals, keeping the prescribed distance. Return to the lodge for a quiet afternoon.

Overnight: A suitable lodge or hotel in the overnight destination, chosen after your preferred comfort level and availability are confirmed.

Day 6: Golden monkeys and Virunga scenery

Return to the park area for a golden monkey trekking experience through bamboo-rich habitats, subject to permit availability. After the activity, spend the afternoon exploring the Musanze region at a gentle pace or relaxing at your lodge. This second primate day gives you time to appreciate a different side of the Virunga ecosystem.

Overnight: A suitable lodge or hotel in the overnight destination, chosen after your preferred comfort level and availability are confirmed.

Day 7: Travel to Lake Kivu

Leave the mountains and travel west toward Lake Kivu. Enjoy scenic stops before checking into a lakeside hotel. The afternoon is reserved for rest, a leisurely shore walk or a short optional boat outing. This pause between trekking regions provides a comfortable break before the journey to Nyungwe.

Overnight: A suitable lodge or hotel in the overnight destination, chosen after your preferred comfort level and availability are confirmed.

Day 8: Lake Kivu to Nyungwe

Continue south through western Rwanda with views of lake landscapes, terraced hills and tea-growing areas. Arrive at Nyungwe National Park later in the day and settle into accommodation within reach of the chimpanzee briefing site. Prepare for a very early departure the next morning.

Overnight: A suitable lodge or hotel in the overnight destination, chosen after your preferred comfort level and availability are confirmed.

Day 9: Nyungwe chimpanzees and canopy

Head to the park briefing before sunrise for chimpanzee tracking with a specialist guide. Forest walking can be demanding and the chimpanzees may move fast. Following lunch and rest, consider a scheduled canopy walkway where conditions and bookings permit. Return to the lodge for dinner and a final rainforest evening.

Overnight: A suitable lodge or hotel in the overnight destination, chosen after your preferred comfort level and availability are confirmed.

Day 10: Back to Kigali

After breakfast, drive north toward Kigali, allowing meal and scenic stops during the journey. Depending on traffic and your flight, enjoy a short visit around the city or proceed directly to the airport. The final schedule should be agreed against your international departure time to avoid rushing.

Overnight: Safari ends after the agreed drop-off; additional accommodation can be arranged if required.
